Get Your Skis Ready @SkiRaves

Still snowy! Lots of places!

The editorial staff at SkiRaves got a chance to see a ski movie together, Friday, as a #tgif before we left to ski for the weekend. The movie was called “First Descent” and, by happy accident, it was a snowboarding movie!

So this is a first in our office of all skiers, but we loved it. I like the non-fiction aspect, of actually learning how boards evolved to this shape. (Looks like Shawn McConkey was really onto something when he skied snow on waterskis!)

Together we saw Saucerboy, and we get it. Let us be the first to tell you, we now love all snow sports and want to support new beginners getting into balance sports. It is a source of happiness for us, so we want to share.

Next it would be good to make brown rice, a pot of hot chili, and have a watching party of “Blizzard of Ahs” or any Warren Miller, Greg Stump, or Matchstick Productions movie. We already have popcorn.

Spring skiing. We’d love recommendations for slush-skiing movies and clips, best areas, good stories, or new stunts.

Vermont Skiing This April Weekend

CONDITIONS

Friday, April 10, 2015

2:48 pm 04/10/15–3 inches of dense, velvety snow made for delightful skiing and riding on Thursday and we’re hoping for more of the same today. That fresh snow softened surfaces and allowed Patrol to open trails across the resort, boosting the trail count by more than 30 trails for Friday. We have a couple of weather related delays this morning but most lifts and trails should operate as scheduled.

Showers in the wee hours this morning limited the number of trails slated for grooming but our team still managed to groom 64. Advanced skiers and riders looking for corduroy cruising will find it on East Fall, Superstar, Cascade, and Wildfire, while those looking for an easier way down will find most learning trails groomed. Moguls on the Highline competition venue and natural bump trails like Vagabond should soften through the morning as temperatures rise. Key lifts are scheduled from 9:00 a.m.-4:00 p.m.

Dos Equis Bear Mountain Mogul Challenge
Course preparation is underway on Outer Limits for Saturday’s competition. As an added bonus, the course will remain open to the public on Sunday April 12 from 9:30 a.m.-2:30 p.m, weather permitting. Anyone interested in hitting the BMMC bumps and jumps can fill out a waiver at the top of the course.

As a spring bonus, key lifts* will operate until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays, weather permitting, so you can enjoy the late afternoon sunshine. Get all the details regarding The Beast’s spring operations on the Insider Blog.

Killington Parks
Our Ramshead Parks have closed for the season but we still have 60 jumps, jibs, boxes, and rails ready to shred in The Stash and Dream Maker. The Superpipe, at the bottom of Bear Mountain, is still going strong too. Get the lowdown.

*Lifts scheduled until 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays, conditions permitting: North Ridge Triple, K-1 Express, Snowdon Quad, Superstar Express, Needles Eye Express, Snowshed Express, Bear Mountain Quad, Northbrook Quad, Sunrise Village Triple, Skye Peak Express.

This weekend, reward yourself at the World of Adventure Dos Equis Apres Ski Party featuring the XX Feast of the Brave, live music and Dos Equis beer at the Roaring Brook Umbrella Bars. Are you up for the adventure?

Vermont! More than just maple syrup. I read that it’s home to 19 major ski areas. One of the biggest, with the most terrain, is called The Beast in the East, Mt. Killington! From their website:

Killington is known for its diversity of terrain and grooming expertise, providing skiers and riders of all ability levels a choice of wide-open groomed cruisers, narrow classic New England runs, moguls, steeps and gladed skiing areas. Killington also offers multiple terrain features for snowboarders and freeskiers, including Bear Mountain’s signature terrain parks.

Off-mountain activities include cross country skiing, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and ice skating, combined with more than 100 restaurants and bars and shopping options throughout the region, making Killington the top resort in the Northeast for après and lively evening entertainment.

During the summer months, Killington features an 18-hole championship Geoffrey Cornish-designed golf course; a Mountain Bike Park served by the K-1 Gondola and a full 18-hole disc golf course.

A winner of the NSAA Golden Eagle Award in 2013 and 2010 winner of the Vermont Governor’s Award for Environmental Excellence and Pollution Prevention, Killington Resort continues to implement innovative energy conservation measures and environmental management practices to reduce energy consumption and the effects of climate change.

Killington Resort is easily accessible from all major East Coast cities by plane, train and automobile. Jet Blue and codeshare partner Cape Air provide daily flights between Boston’s Logan International Airport and Rutland Southern Vermont Regional Airport – a short 30 minute drive to the slopes of Killington Resort.  Amtrak’s Ethan Allen Express provides daily service between Rutland and New York City’s Pennsylvania Station.
